Elevate the Mind

We always have the potential to rise. Rise out of our slump. Rise out of our negative thoughts. Rise out of our comfort zone. Rise out of our complaints. GET UP AND RISE…Rising is a choice that’s one powerful thought away.~~Kris Carr

This is my daily mantra! POSITIVE is what needs to come out of me with every word I say to others.

Elevate the mind and the body will follow!

Today’s handpicked project is a super easy to make Breezy Shell Tank, constructed in two simple pieces which are then stitched up the sides. The color change at the bodice and the short slit up the side add to the visual appeal. If you haven’t knitted with Patons Silk Bamboo, I highly recommend it.

Classic Elite Yarns Magnolia is one of my newest favorites! I love how soft and squishy it is. And the sheen–it’s to die for. You can only imagine how much I love this week’s newly published Josephina, knit in 3 colors of Magnolia. I love the combination of lace and stripes that Amanda Rios put together!

Life’s an Adventure

Security is mostly superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do children as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.~~Helen Keller

Is it good to risk than doing nothing at all? I am convinced that the true spirit in me chose a daring adventure over nothing. Nothing in nature is guaranteed or ever stays the same. Nature lives, thrives, changes and functions into a variable future.

I prefer to go forward into life–even the deep yet fascinating mysterious unknown aspect of it–than spend any time at all avoiding anything, danger included. Learning, growing and healing are adventures. The security I know arises from within me. Life’s an adventure. Dare it.

Make Every Day Count

Use my own voice. Make up my own mind. Live from my heart, not anyone else’s.

I will not lose sight of the BIG picture. Make every day count. Surround myself with those who make me LAUGH.

I won’t put off ’til TOMORROW what I can do TODAY. Work hard. PLAY harder. Dream BIG. What can I give that will influence someone’s life?

Tails and Feathers Shawlette pattern is FREE ’til noon PST, tomorrow, August 23. Fabulous texture and interest. This will be on the needles this fall, by the fire for sure. ♥

Ups and Downs Crochet Slouchy Beanie is crocheted in worsted yarn. It’s an ideal last-minute gift to make. Give it a try. Thank you, Tamara, for the free pattern.

Tap into the Mind

You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lost it.” ~~Robin Williams

Deep down beyond all doubts, beyond all fears, I know I can accomplish everything that I put my mind to. Tap into that. I Can. This was the mantra I shared with my 16-year-old this evening. Life is good especially when I can have a quiet, relaxing day with one of my children and that I’m a mother, not a teacher, not a friend.

Presenting today’s knitting inspiration–Pink Onyx.  It’s a cute top in DK-weight yarn, currently FREE. Special giveaway from the designer: “For those who finished this pullover by 30th October, 2014, you have a chance to win for a free pattern of your choice from my designs! Update your project page with your best shot/s of this pullover on you.  Be creative, be artistic, have fun with your camera! Make sure you mention you enter this sweepstake. I will choose one winner and one runner-up by 5th November. A winner gets two free patterns from my designs, and a runner-up gets one.” I may make mine long sleeves.

Make your own bunny with this FREE crocheted pattern. The adorable amigurumi would brighten someone’s day, for sure.

Hope your day was just as fabulous as mine–spontaneous and fun (with PDXKnitterati and bikenewsgirl even though it was brief.) Don’t forget to visit my Facebook page here for more inspiring projects.   As always, they are FREE.

Everyday Anew

Not every sky will be blue and not every day is springtime. So on the spiritual path a person learns to find this kind of happiness without needing nice things to happen on the outside. Rather, you find happiness by being who you really are. This isn’t mystical. Young children are happy being who they are. The trick is to regain such a state when you are grown and have seen the light and dark sides of life.~~Deepak Chopra

Maybe cleaning the clutter from my life may help me find the things that have been there all along. I do believe I possess that child-like innocence that helps me find happiness in the simplest things in my everyday life. And the sky is always blue. Every day anew…remembering my true nature is of utmost importance!

Today’s adventure in knitting–isn’t Kelcema adorable? It’s a quick knit. Thank you, Berroco, for the free knitted pattern.

You know how much I love cardigans and have way too many in my stash and in my favorites. The one I will knit soon is Beth Cardigan. Timeless and elegant. Though the complimentary pattern comes with instruction for only bust size 32″–with stitch gauge given, it’s easy to multiply out and adjust the size to your needs. I certainly have to do it on a regular basis to decrease the size of things. Some math work and try-as-you-go are required, for sure. It’s doable.

With the look of a vintage ski sweater and just the right warmth, the classic Moominblankie would make a perfect welcome for a holiday baby. The knitted blanket pattern is FREE.  I love that red heart infant!

I’m a collector of baby blanket patterns as I love knitting for charities. I can’t wait to crochet up Lorna Miser’s Hugs and Kisses Blanket!! Really cute and creative! Thank you, Yarnspiration for the complimentary pattern.

That’s all for today while I pack again for a road trip.  Visit my Facebook page here for more inspiring projects.   As always, they are FREE.

Am I listening?

Even my normally cool-as-a-cucumber teen get unnerved when it comes to starting back school this week, feeling the jitters about the year ahead as a junior.

Since the kids were born, my husband and I worked hard to provide a safe haven for ’em–a place free from hurtful attacks on appearance, intelligence, and abilities. “But siblings are supposed to knock each other down and toughen each other up.”  I can just hear the naysayers say. I need someone in my corner–to have my back–to believe in me when I don’t believe in myself. When that person is someone who lives in my house knowing my every weakness and fault, it can be a life-changer. I believe my kids can do this for each other and for those learning how to live by watching us live. I am having this important conversation with my oldest daughter. Yes. The best thing I can do is teach MY children to cherish their siblings. This is when and how children learn love, care and respect others. This does not come naturally and I, as their mother, must recognize the role I play when I have been in the position of first teacher.

As parent, I try my best to listen to the rants, complaints, and whining of the less-dominant child. Watch how my children play and interact. Does one always win? Is one always the boss or bossier? My children are all different. Their birth orders differ. Their genders differ. Family finance changes over time–and commodities that belonged to the older one are now being passed down or shared–can make my kids think now one being favorite/spoiled.  More than ever before, I try to help my kids understand sibling rivalry and the dynamics of living under one roof.  How do you approach this sensitive topic?

Super-nice pattern from Tanis Fiber Arts this morning just in case you are looking for a new sweater cardigan pattern to knit. Lady Sunnyside is available for FREE this week with coupon code SUNNY. It has two options for the fronts–cables or lace. Which will you pick?

With college football season approaching fast, Football Beanie of Awesomeness by Joni Memmott/BriAbbyit is just perfect. The crochet pattern is FREE. And I’ll bet you can hook it up in two weeks, in time for the kick-off.

I’m Never Lost

I’m merely finding my way.

It’s easy to just get wrapped up and never move past.  When I thought she would back away, she walked forward.  Growing through her struggles, confusion, uncertainty, and the moments of bliss as she experiences the natural occurrences that I experienced as I began my journey in adulthood.

Not that she doesn’t get nervous when competing, it’s just that the nerves don’t show.  Here is the instant replay of the teen’s competition piece performed yesterday at 2014 Central Oregon District Solo & Ensemble.  It didn’t matter that how tired she was or who’s in the judging room, she just played her heart out.  (It’s a long piece…so grab a cup of coffee or your favorite drink, sit comfortably, and enjoy.)

Everyone there heard her expressive tone and musical phrasing.  So did the adjudicator.

As defending champion, the teen is advancing to compete at state level in May at Lewis & Clark University.  The improvement in rhythm, technique, and articulation has given her a great set of new tools in her musical arsenal.  Her mentor Lynn Lakin feels she is on the verge of going up another entire level.

I am a proud mother who couldn’t help but share the admiration for my daughter.

beautiful friendship since childhood

With good intention…quilting just wasn’t an option as my vision is still bothering me today.

No worry. Tomorrow will be a better day. I just feel it.

Winter Knits/Crochets: Freebies

In life, I realize there is a role for everyone I meet. Some tests me. Some uses me. Some loves me. And some teaches me.

But the ones whom are truly important are the ones who bring out the best in me.  You are the rare and amazing being who reminds me why it’s worth it.  Thank you.

The past few months have been a whirlwind of changes in both my teens and my personal life.   But, one thing remains constant.  I am STILL knitting, spinning, wet felting, designing, sewing, and working to open an etsy shop.

After taking a 3-month break, I am now back to share my daily reflection, random thoughts that I find interesting, and not to mention my crafty obsession.  More on my fiber adventure tomorrow.  For now, I want to enable you with new projects.  What’s best?  They are absolutely free!

  1. You gotta check this Snowflake Stranded Shawl beauty out.  Use coupon code Snowflake for your free copy.  Deborah Tomasello, the generous designer, wants to give away as many patterns as she can!   I’m not sure how long this is good for so grab it while you can.
  2. Autumn leaves cowl is another freebie.   Use coupon code MyNewCowl at check-out.  The offer is good ’til January 5.
  3. Hat with Small Lacy Diamonds in Size Adult is up for grab–complimentary–’til January 31.
  4. 33 Blocks Sock is free for winter duration.  No coupon needed.
  5. The elegant Rhombix scarf is free ’til January 12
  6. Cirque Cardigan is a part of Lace Ice ebook, free through March 15.
  7. Get your free pattern code when you sign up for Lucy Hague’s newsletter.  Her Celtic shawls are absolutely fabulous, fun knits.

Where did the last week go?  I actually enjoyed the days where my fingers didn’t hit the computer keys.  How did you spend the holiday?

Friday evenings are da best!  I go to the library room of the house and start creating.   TGIF!  (Shown below is one of my three 12″ by 12″ knitted blocks for a local community project to a Rosie Bareis 2014 fundraiser, a fun and elegant piece to show off lacy details.)

Welcome 2014!

As hard as it is to believe, 2014 is here.

In a world where so many folks focus on the bad instead of the good, the ugly instead of the beautiful, on scarcity instead of abundance, fear instead of love…

I’ll dare to do things differently. I’ll dare to smile when others frown, to believe when others doubt and to love when others fear…

Wishing you all a Happy New Year all the way from Central Oregon.
