A little bit of this and, a little bit of that, makes a little bit of me.

A Landmark Occasion

You only turn 50 once! It marks a major life milestone as I begin the transition into the later years of middle agemy best friend in Austin and I cracked up over this on our Skype party/celebration last Friday!
Fabulous Evening
In addition to some good-natured jesting from family and friends, the evening was COMPLETE–peppered with good wishes and terrific companies as we sat around a table and enjoyed some very nice assortment sushi…it was too cold for a takeaway.
Fabulous Evening
I am a hard person to buy for, outside of fiber and art! But this year, my family did me proud without struggle to decide upon such a gift. I am delighted in the New Year to hand over a very nice pile of cash to American Red Cross for supporting its disaster relief effort in Japan. If I have one wish for 2011, and it were granted, perhaps others will dedicate their milestone birthdays in the same way and think of supporting a local charity before themselves 😀
Modern Cloche
The knitterly things have continued this week in a form of a hat. Modern Cloche features a simple lace stitch pattern and a seed-stitch, in double strand, knitted brim. It’s created using a gorgeous cotton blend in my friend Erin’s favorite hue Periwinkle. The hat, modeled by my 10-year-old, is very versatile and fun to wear.
Modern Cloche
cast on for medium size…and hard-stretched the brim for a looser fit

Shown here the inside fabric
It’s suitable for everyday wear as its made of super soft cotton yarn and can be tossed in the washing machine with everything else!
Modern Cloche
although I recommend hand-washing and drying flat
Believe it or not. This could-have-been a quick knit took me what appeared to be a lifetime over 2 hours to bind off! The 5-stitch I-cord, double stranded, in worsted cotton was a serial serious killer. I swear (and I don’t do swear often, mind you) I’ll never do that again! NO more double-strand I-Cord bind-off…in worsted cotton? The effect however is glorious…and it’s worth the pain for a special friend.
Modern Cloche
Made to fit average size adult head, worn with brim up or down
With the kitchener’s graft, the lace looks seamless when joined together.
Modern Cloche
Slipping first stitch of each row made picking up stitches for lacy crowd and double-strand seeded brim a breeze, with a polished finish.
Modern Cloche
I will definitely make another clothe in some silky wool blend, adorned with a fabulous undulating square vintage button perhaps. A beautiful twist on a beanie and flapper hat to make a stylish compromise of individuality and Elegance–very fashionable, great addition for the spring wardrobe!

Happy crafting and keep those creative juices running!
